Shell technique Master Course – Autologous to Relining to Allogeneic

Current concepts & new developments

Dr. Jochen Tunkel

In many implant rehabilitations bone augmentation is necessary to provide sufficient volume of the alveolar process for implantat placement in the correct prosthetic position. Though the implantologist has a wide range of options and materials to choose from the shell technique developed by Prof Khoury becomes more and more the standard of bone augmentation. Further developments of the technique do even show better results and offer the opportunity to work with less morbidity for the patient. The concept of augmentative relining during implantation after shell technique augmentation and the allogeneic bone plates are just two of these developments. Is autologous bone irreplaceable as the gold standard or do we now have equivalent methods available? What do allogeneic bone replacement materials do and how safe is their usage? Are there certain surgical prerequisites that have to be followed?

The course is aimed at dentists, periodontologists, oral surgeons and oral and maxillofacial surgeons who want to expand their spectrum in the field of implantology, especially in the area of augmentative surgery and soft tissue management. With the help of numerous clinical images and video demonstrations, the principles, methods and materials for the autologous and allogeneic shell technique will be presented in a practical and reproducible manner. Practical exercises on the model and on the pig’s jaw should facilitate direct implementation and handling.

  • presentation of the instruments & materials – what instruments do we need?

  • differential therapeutic indications for bone substitutes & membranes – where are the limits?

  • autologous bone harvesting – techniques, indications & limitations

  • autologous bone augmentation using the shell technique/split bone technique – basic principles of the standard therapy

  • augmentative relining during implantation – what is it useful for?

  • allogeneic bone grafts – the new gold standard of the shell technique?

  • soft tissue management during shell technique augmentation, implantation and stage 2 surgery – the basic of success

  • complication management – how to handle different complications

About the speaker

Dr. Jochen Tunkel completed five years of training in periodontology, graduating as a specialist in periodontology (German Fachzahnarzt). He then moved to Professor Khoury’s clinic, where he completed his training as an oral surgery specialist (German Fachzahnarzt) and Master of Oral Medicine in Implantology. During his 3-year postgraduate program he learned the shell technique in detail. During this time, his also focused on soft tissue management for large augmentations and implant-augmentative rehabilitation of periodontally severely compromised patients. After opening his own practice in 2007, he focused his work on the further development of the shell technique. To this end, he initially conducted work on augmentative relining with Dr. Luca de Stavola. Since 2018, he has been working intensively on the allogeneic shell technique and has helped it to achieve a breakthrough. In particular, he has focused on the basic principles of allogeneic and autologous shell techniques that improve the success of these methods.
